CDS — Paediatric dehydration
Four clinical signs of dehydration in gastroenteritis.
Clinical Dehydration Scale
Principle
Sum of explicitly entered contributions; no default clinical value.
Scope
Gastroenteritis in children from 1month to 5years, 2008 validation population. Original 2004 derivation limited to 1–36months. Four clinical signs 0/1/2, total 0–8.
Interpretation limits
Clinical dehydration assessment, without individual estimation of weight deficit or rehydration prescription. The score does not replace vital signs, perfusion, urine output, oral tolerance and reassessment; severe impairment needs clinical assessment independent of the total. Local French rewording, not a validated translation. Do not extrapolate to newborns or every cause of dehydration.
Formula and logic
Sum of explicit contributions, without prior rounding.
Interpretation
- 0–0
- No signs according to CDS
- 1–4
- Mild dehydration
- 5–8
- Moderate to severe dehydration
